Eight services, six towns

A general contractor does not have one job, they have eight, and each one is a different person searching a different phrase in a different mood. Somebody planning a custom home has been thinking about it for two years. Somebody with a leaking roof has been thinking about it since this morning. Putting both on a page called Services and hoping means the page is a compromise for everyone.

So there are eight service pages, one each for remodeling, custom homes, additions, roofing, decks, commercial, concrete and repairs. Then six service-area pages for Bandon, Coos Bay, North Bend, Coquille, Myrtle Point and Port Orford, because in a rural county the second half of the search is nearly always the town.

Fourteen pages doing that work is the whole reason a small local contractor can show up against a franchise. The franchise has one page for the region. He has one for each town he actually drives to.

The gallery is the estimate before the estimate

Nobody hires a contractor off a paragraph. The gallery is built around before-and-after pairs, eleven of them, on real jobs: a kitchen taken back to studs, a home exterior renovation, a custom home addition. Same angle, same framing, before and after, so the change is the thing you see rather than something you have to be told about.

Every photo is their own work. No stock, no supplier catalogue shots, no borrowed job from a franchise library. That is a hard rule on everything I build, and on a trades site it is not a scruple, it is the product.

Publishing what it costs

There is a page on this site that lists project costs, which most contractors will not do. The argument against it is that a number scares people off. The argument for it is that the people a number scares off were never going to sign, and everybody else is sitting there with their phone trying to work out whether a call is worth making. Ranges answer that question. Silence just moves it to a phone call nobody enjoys.

There is a FAQ page for the same reason. Both of them exist to answer the questions a homeowner is already asking, which is also, not by accident, what search engines are ranking for.

What it runs on

Next.js with TypeScript, statically rendered and served from Vercel behind Cloudflare, with strict transport security preloaded. Lighthouse sits in the high nineties on mobile and the security grade is A+, both measured live on the wall rather than quoted from a screenshot taken on a good day.

The repository has 105 commits across six months, which is the honest picture of what maintaining a site looks like when the person who built it is still the person answering the phone.
